Born an Italian, but with a mindset that stretches to all corners of the earth, Filippo Dall’Asta has found his calling in one of music’s most underappreciated but fascinating genres of music, “gypsy jazz”. A lifelong love affair that started at age 16 with a gifted record by Django Reinhardt, the father of the genre, it has become a self-fulfilling passion for Filippo that has taken him to some unexpected places and put him in unusual life circumstances.
Now Berlin-based, he has been shaped by the many different perspectives and cultures he has come across, both as a former resident of London and as the quintessential, twenty-something backpacker in Asia, unwittingly shaping his future path as a serious master of his trade.
His music is centered around his unique guitar style — always backed by the traditional double bass, but often drawing from the sounds of his multicultural life experience, Filippo is no stranger to the wide array of Indian instrumentation that is noticeable in his music. This can be credited to his London connections and presence in its music scene, where he astoundingly managed to put together a 20-piece ensemble, highlighting the British-Indian musicianship that is a noteworthy feature of contemporary London music culture.
For Filippo, music as a business and a passion has always been a balancing act; luckily he has found a way to make efficient use of his abilities for both. Formally educated in London, and now offering his own lessons as a teacher of the gypsy jazz style, Filippo seems to have found the sweet spot between his passion in practice, touring and composing, and sharing it with the masses through professional coaching.
